Independent Study Blog, to showcase the work that I will be completing during my self-directed course. The work will showcase and explore the relationships between typography and automobiles, specifically Corvettes of the 1960's.

ALMOST DONE WITH THE BOOK!!!!

Holy shit, I never thought that I would see the day. And holy crap, I am pleased with it.

[Almost done as in almost done with the page layouts. I still have to write the paper and include a bibliography page and page numbers and such. But still…the hardest part is almost complete. WOO!]

*Still only a draft. More photographs/passages/pages to be added. (Black boxes = place holders) *To view in higher(but still a bit crappy) res, click on each photo

My independent study book is going to cost so much to print. GAH!

So far, it’s at 33 pages, with 17 spreads. Blah. At least it is going to look amazing…

Decisions, decisions.

I can’t decide if I want to use Garamond or Baskerville…I think I may use Baskerville. The quotation marks are better looking, and the uppercase letters are not as tall.

Quotes, passages, etc.

It’s really long, so I put it under the “read more” link. I still have to transcribe more of the passages from Letters to Philip Hofer, the Harley Earl article, the car design book, and a few others. I am also going to call my dad to ask him if he could email me a couple statements about the process of rebuilding the car as well as his opinions about the design of Corvettes in general.

Opening for my paper(which is going to be a forward/preface to the rest of the book)

The following collection of photographs and passages represents the relationship between the designer and the craftsman. They explore the process that plays out between the type designer and punchcutter, and automobile designer and the mould makers.

“We see cars all the time, but how often do we look at them as works of art?”

First page and I can already tell that I’m going to be enjoying this book. It may end up taking me a little while to read it all, but it is already clear to me that it is going to be interesting.

Photographs.

I took photos of the Vette this weekend. Some came out pretty good, others, not so much. I’ll have to get back there at some point to shoot more. Maybe the dad will have done more to it, too.

Adrian Frutiger designed a crap-ton of typefaces…

About 30 of them…which include Univers, Frutiger, Avenir, and Didot…he must have been a busy man…

Lead type from the letterpress room.

Scratch that last…

Garamond that lard scale in general looks horrid.
